About:

In celebration of National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday on Thursday, March 2, the Adelphi University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was out and about in the Long Island community, reading to students at the Front Street Elementary School in Hempstead.

“Being able to celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday was an exciting and enjoyable day for our student-athletes,” said Gordon Purdie, SAAC advisor and head men’s lacrosse coach. “Both Adelphi and Division II stress the importance of life in the balance for our athletes — which is the idea of developing them in the classroom and on the court, as well as serving the community — so I am incredibly proud to see our student-athletes wholeheartedly embrace that philosophy, and share their time with kids in the community.”

In two sessions across the morning and afternoon, the Panthers visited classrooms and read aloud to the students from several different selections, including some of Dr. Seuss’ most famous works.

“We had a great time getting out into the community and reading to kids,” said Jeanine Nunez, women’s soccer student-athlete and SAAC representative. “It means a lot to us to have the opportunity to interact with them, and to represent Adelphi off our field in schools on Long Island.”
